Lion flag, President’s Portrait atop Everest Range

 

 

 

         Some ten members of the “Sri Lanka Dheera Balakaya” had successfully climbed the kalapathar, the uppermost point of the famous Mount Everest range, passing the primary camping base under the 2009 Everest climbing strategy recently. At this climbing strategy recently. At this climbing expedition, the 10 member Sri Lanka climbing team had passed the 5364m high Everest base camp and finally reached the 5545m high kalapathar bank planting the Sri Lanka flag at both these points while also displaying a portrait of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
          A picture depicting this unique event was recently presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa by the leader of the “Sri Lanka Dheera Balakaya” G.A.Sanjaya kumara President scout an old boy Rahula College Matara. Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhana, Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and President of the Rahula College O.B.A (Colombo Branch)/ President of the Old Scout Society and Executive Director of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Dr.Sanjaya Sedara Senarath also participated at the occasion.


Himalayan Peaks Conquered by Lankan Team 2009

   

 

Conquering the Himalayan peaks, especially Mount Everest is a great feat. Recently ten member Lankan team of the Sri Lanka Adventure Force successfully trekked the Everest Base camp (5364m) And Mount Kalapathar (5545m) in Nepal. The Expedition undertaken under the patronage of the sport Ministry was completed within a period of 37 days. The team included G.A.Sanjaya Kumara –Team Leader and Guide(Our Member of Rahula College Old Scout Society),Dhammika Walisundara (Dharmaraja College-Kandy),Amila Siriwardhena (Ananda College-Colombo),Upul Kulasekara (Thurstan College- Colombo),Upul D.Palihakkara,Asanka K.Jayanath,P.K.Amila Madhuranga,Chanaka Premachandra,K.I.R.Pradeep Kumara (All Of Mahinda College-Galle.

A group of teens from Matara Rahula College entered their names among the climbers. G.A.Sanjaya kumara (President Scout/Scout Leader) Mihindu D.Palihakkara (President Scout), Pradeepa Champathi (President Scout/Troop Leader), Pranith Madushanka (President Scout), comprised the team that went on the expedition.


        “We left Sri Lanka on February 22 to India. It was very exciting. From there we crossed the border and entered Nepal. After a long journey we reached our hotel in Nepal. We started the expedition on March 1st .It was very cold. We woke up around 5.00am to begin our journey. Teens said.


          They said the expedition was tiring. ”It was tiring at times but we enjoyed it. Our aim was to place the name Rahula among those who had climbed Himalayan Range earlier. We were determined to climb up to “Kalapathar (5545m) Peak in Everest mountain range” teens said.


           “Each Day we had different places to reach. It was not easy to reach them as it was very cold. We had to fight our way towards our goal. We all were together right throughout. We worked as a team and helped each other” they added.
          They said they made a lot of effort to reach their goal. “We walked through the paths with great difficulty and reached ‘Amadablam’ mountain range.


           From there we saw Everest peak but after a moment it was covered by the mist. Tengboche was the next place we reached and it was 3980m high, teens said.


         “It was difficult higher and at times it was so painful. But nothing could stop us from reaching our goal. With the training we received we were determined to reach the peak some how” they said. “March 12 was an important day for. Us we reached the Everest Base Camp that day. We could see the Everest peak Clearly. We had to walk over ice and on our way we saw a small avalanche.


          We were triumphant when we hung the school flag at the Everest Base Camp (5364m).
We took photos and we were overwhelmed on that day, they explained. “On March 13th we reached Everest.
We took photographs with the national flag and the school flag. It was very cold and we were tired. At the some time we were thrilled because we reached our goal,
